Parenting 000: The NAP!
July 14, 2014
Nap time has been in effect since the beginning of time – especially for children! Kids need the “down” time to rejuvenate and, most important, so they aren’t crabby come 4 and 5 p.m. What’s happened to this time?
Parents now plop their kids in front of the TV (if they haven’t already been there all morning) hoping to find some peace for themselves and/or hoping that the child will fall asleep. How can a child fall asleep watching the fast paced movies or cartoons that are so prevalent?
Back in the day, children knew that after lunch it was nap time – no ifs, ands or buts! Sometimes some quiet classical music lulled them to sleep or a book that would soon cause their eyelids to fall. During the summer, even my older children knew that 1 – 3 p.m. was quiet time. Reading was the activity of choice. That is when I had time to catch up on laundry, paint ceramics (uninterrupted) or dig into a good book. Everyone benefited from that time – happier kids, better moods and rejuvenated – even Mom!
Nowadays, children could benefit from 1 hour away from electronics – their mind and their eyes.
And just as a note: tired and hungry children NEVER belong in a store or other public place – in case you are one of the parents that didn’t know that!!!
